Alcohol Dilution Calculator

This online all-in-one Alcohol Dilution Calculator relates the amount of water you need to add to dilute a given amount of alcohol of a given concentration (or strength) to the amount of alcohol solution of the desired concentration.

You can enter the values of three known parameters (one of them must be the strength of alcohol or solution) in the input fields of this calculator and find the missing parameters. It is important to note that all the volumes are given in the same volume units.

How to Dilute Alcohol?

Dilution of alcohol is the process of decreasing the concentration of alcohol in a solution, usually simply by adding more water to the solution. The resulting solution is thoroughly mixed so as to ensure that all parts of the solution are identical. The alcohol dilution formula is as follows:

Solution volume = (Alcohol % / Solution %) × Alcohol volume

where
Solution volume is the volume of diluted alcohol,
Alcohol % is the starting alcohol strength percentage,
Solution % is the desired solution alcohol strength percentage,
Alcohol volume is the starting alcohol volume.

Our alcohol dilution calculator is a simple online tool that facilitates significantly all the calculations related to alcohol dilution. By plugging in any three known parameters you can find the missing ones. The only obvious limitation is that either the initial alcohol concentration (Alcohol %) or the alcohol concentration in the resulting solution (Solution %) must be specified.

Why Do We Dilute Alcohol?

Alcohol dilution is necessary in various situations of everyday life. For example, when making alcoholic cocktails or other mixed drinks diluting alcohol with water can make the drink less strong and more pleasant to drink. This is especially useful if you’re hosting a party and want to offer low-alcohol options to your guests. It can also be helpful if you want to limit your own alcohol intake for health reasons.

Another situation where alcohol dilution can be important in everyday life is when using alcohol as a solvent or reagent in various household tasks. For example, you may need to dilute alcohol with water in order to use it as a disinfectant for certain surfaces or as a solvent to remove stains or dirt. In this situation it is important to calculate accurately the concentration of alcohol to ensure it is safe and effective for the intended use.

Alcohol is commonly used as a solvent in perfume production as it helps dissolve essential oils and other fragrances. If you make your own perfume at home, you may need to dilute alcohol with water to achieve the desired concentration and strength.

Alcohol can also be used to soften and exfoliate the skin, which can be helpful in keeping the skin healthy and reducing calluses. To use alcohol for these purposes, it must be diluted with water so that it dries the skin less and is more convenient to use.
