BAI Calculator

BAI Calculator for adults gives an estimation of the body adiposity index (BAI) value based on the human height, hip size (hip circumference) and age. It can be applied both to men and women between the ages of 20 and 80 years. To calculate the BAI percentage choose appropriate measurement units and specify the height, hip size and age either using the sliders or inserting the data in the calculator fields, then specify the gender.

Body Adiposity Index

The body adiposity index (BAI) is a method of estimating the amount of body fat in humans. Unlike the body mass index (BMI), the BAI is calculated without using body weight. Instead, it uses the hip size (hip circumference) compared to the person’s height.

The BAI is described by the following empirical formula:

BAI = Hip size (cm) / Height (m)1.5 – 18.

The BAI can be used to reflect body fat percentage for adult men and women of differing ethnicities without numerical correction.

Surprising that the adiposity could be well estimated without using a mechanical or electronic measurement of body weight. Thus, even in remote places where only the simplest and least expensive tools are available (only a tape measure), a reliable estimate of adiposity may be obtained. While the height of adult people is relatively constant, it is the measurement of hip circumference that potentially may introduce error to the estimation of BAI.

Knowing person’s height and hip circumference (measured at the greatest protrusion of buttocks) one can easily find the BAI with the help of our body adiposity index calculator.

Let’s do an example calculation for a woman aged 40, height 172 cm and hip size 107 cm. We can plug in all these data into our BAI calculator and instantly get the result BAI = 29.43% which is considered healthy.

Health status depending on the body fat percentage assessed by the BAI is presented in the following table:

Women:

20-39 yrs old: Underweight: < 21 %, Healthy: 21-33 %, Overweight: 33-39 %, Obese: > 39 %
40-59 yrs old: Underweight: < 23 %, Healthy: 23-35 %, Overweight: 35-41 %, Obese: > 41 %
60-79 yrs old: Underweight: < 25 %, Healthy: 25-38 %, Overweight: 38-43 %, Obese: > 43 %

Men:

20-39 yrs old: Underweight: < 8 %, Healthy: 8-21 %, Overweight: 21-26 %, Obese: > 26 %
40-59 yrs old: Underweight: < 11 %, Healthy: 11-23 %, Overweight: 23-29 %, Obese: > 29 %
60-79 yrs old: Underweight: < 13 %, Healthy: 13-25 %, Overweight: 25-31 %, Obese: > 31 %
