Here are some limitations in use and best practices for various applications.

Facebook post can be up to 63,206 characters long. But the general census is that an ideal Facebook post should be somewhere between 40 and 50 characters.

Twitter’s post limit now is 280 characters for all Tweets. There are indications that tweets between 71 and 100 characters get the most engagement. Note that Twitter direct messages can be up to 10,000 characters long.

Instagram captions can now be up to 2,200 characters long and can contain up to 30 hashtags. Instagram recommends to keep your captions under 125 characters.

LinkedIn statuses can be up to 700 characters long company page posts, and 1,300 characters for statuses on individual accounts. Best practice is to keep posts under 140 characters for both personal and company posts.

Some other character limits: Snapchat – 250 characters, Reddit Title – 300 characters, Pinterest – 500 characters. An SMS text message limit is 160 characters.
