Calculating Pace

Pace is simply a way of measuring how long it takes you to cover a certain distance. Instead of measuring how many miles (or kilometers) per hour you move, pace is expressed in minutes per mile (or per kilometer).

But why pace and not just speed? The point is that in practice it is easier to measure the time spent on a given distance than the distance covered in a given time.

If a runner wants to know how fast they are moving, they usually need a stopwatch and a pre-measured distance, such as a running track. One lap on the standard track is 400 meters and four laps is equal to a mile. You start the stopwatch, run four laps, and then hit stop. The resulting time is your mile pace.

To calculate your pace, you will need to know the distance you have walked or run and the time it took you to do so:

Pace = Time / Distance

A pace may not be a round number of minutes, so you will need to convert fractions of a minute to seconds.

For example, using our Pace Calculator for running you can easily find that running 8 miles in 1 hour means that your pace is 07 min and 30 sec per mile.

Using the above formula, you can find the value of any parameter present in it, knowing the values of the other two parameters. At the same time, it is easy to see that the pace and speed are not independent parameters, but are related by the ratio:
