When Might We Need to Know the Average Time?

There are quite a few cases where we may need to find the average of several time intervals. For example, a company’s management may want to know the average time spent by its employees on a task. Or a student might want to know how long it takes on average to prepare for a test. And how many of us wanted to know how long it takes on average to get to work.

Here is another important example. Almost all of us have to make phone calls to various institutions from time to time. A key performance indicator widely used in call centers is the Average Handling Time (AHT). It measures the average duration of interaction between center employees and customers.

This important metric allows call center management to determine the required staffing level to handle a high volume of calls without sacrificing service quality.

In all these and many other cases, determining the average time can help identify areas where we can improve our performance. For example, if a company finds that its employees spend an average of 40 minutes per day on routine tasks that can be automated, it can invest in automation software to save time and money. Or, if a student finds that they spend an average of 2.5 hours a day preparing for tests, they may try to find ways to study more effectively.

How to Calculate the Average Time

To calculate the average of multiple times or time intervals, the following simple algorithm can be used.

1) First, we must convert all the time intervals to a single unit of measurement. In our online calculator, this unit is the second.

2) Next, we find a simple arithmetic average of all the time intervals expressed in seconds. In doing so, we round the result to integer seconds using the standard rounding algorithm.

3) Now, to represent the resulting average in the standard format HH:MM:SS, we divide the result by 60 (the number of seconds in a minute) and take the remainder of this division as the number of seconds of the desired average time.

4) The quotient of this division we will again divide by 60 (the number of minutes in an hour). We take the remainder of this last division as the number of minutes of the desired average time.

5) And finally, the quotient of this last division will be the number of hours of the desired average time.

Manual calculations using the above algorithm are not a big problem. However, such calculations can be time-consuming and prone to errors. Therefore, it is much easier to use our Average Time Calculator instead.
