Basal Metabolic Rate Calculator

Basal Metabolic Rate Calculator for adults gives an estimation of the basal metabolic rate (BMR) value based on the human height, weight and age, and can be applied to men and women between the ages of 20 and 80 years. To calculate BMR value choose appropriate measurement units and specify the height, weight and age either using the sliders or inserting the data in the calculator fields, then specify the gender.

Calculate your basal metabolic rate

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of calories a body burns per day as it performs basic (basal) life-sustaining functions.

Other synonyms, used instead of BMR, are Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and Resting Energy Expenditure (REE), which essentially are the calories burned if a person stays in bed all day. In any case the basal metabolic rate formula is used to calculate the body’s metabolism rate which represents the minimum amount of energy needed to keep a body functioning, including breathing, keeping the heart beating, maintenance of body temperature.

Basal metabolic rate formula

There are a few BMR formulas used for estimation of the basal metabolic rate. The ADA (American Dietetic Association) published in 2005 a Comparison of Predictive Equations for Resting Metabolic Rate in Healthy Non-obese and Obese Adults. The Mifflin-St Jeor formula was found to be the most accurate one. It estimates BMR to within 10% of that measured and has the narrowest error range. This BMR formula is used in our online BMR calculator:

BMR = 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) – 5 x age (years) – 161, for women,

BMR = 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) – 5 x age (years) + 5, for men.
