Markup Formula

The markup (or price spread), usually expressed as a percentage of cost, is the difference between the selling price of a good or service and its cost.

The markup percentage is related to such a financial concept as the gross profit margin (or gross margin). They both measure the same thing in different ways. The markup percentage expresses gross profit (revenue minus cost) as a percentage of cost, while the gross profit margin expresses gross profit as a percentage of price.

All markup calculations are based on the following simple formulas:

Markup = 100% * Profit / Cost

Revenue = Profit + Cost

Using our Markup Calculator you can find any two of the four parameters in these formulas, provided that the other two parameters are known.

The primary requirement for this indicator of economic activity is quite obvious. The markup on the product or service must be sufficient to cover all business expenses and generate a profit.

The markup percentage is important for running a healthy business because it puts the focus on cost. Knowing the industry-specific prices for goods or services produced by the enterprise, and taking into account the typical markup percentage, it is possible to estimate the maximum level of cost. If the real cost exceeds this level, then it is necessary to make every effort to reduce it.

The typical markup percentage depends on the industry. It is believed that a good markup percentage is one that results in prices that customers are willing to pay and at the same time generates enough gross margin to keep the business going and grow.
